If this story isn’t a perfect example of the crazy things we do when a room gets too hot, we don’t know what is.
A few years ago, a middle school in California decided it wanted to save some money.
They removed all the thermostats from the classrooms and installed a new A/C system that set the temperature centrally for the whole school. Even as the rooms started heating up during the warmer days of spring, the building manager kept the system set at 74 degrees, instead of its usual 68. Pretty soon, the students were complaining that the rooms were boiling hot.
So what did the teachers do? They realized the school’s new A/C system had a temperature sensor for every classroom. So they all went out and bought clip-on desk lamps, popped in a 100W incandescent bulb, and pointed the lamp straight at the sensor. The heat from the bulb tricked the sensor into thinking it was 90 degrees in the classroom and—voila! The room cooled down.
And when it was too cold during the winter? Let’s just say the nurse’s office had a tough time keeping ice packs in stock.
It’s bad enough for a school to operate this way, but it’s certainly no way to run your home. You don’t have to fool the system with ecovent. Just set the temperature the way you like it, and we’ll keep you comfortable, automatically. Sign up today to be one of the first to buy ecovent.
